Digital Signage

What is it?

As the name suggests, digital signage is the next generation in information delivery that utilises electronic display equipment such as LCDs, plasma display panels, electronic billboards, projection screens or scrolling message boards rather than traditional printed signs.

Intended to deliver targeted messages to specific locations at specific times, the technology allows the displayed content to be modified remotely, typically via the Internet.  Content can range from simple text and still images, to full-motion video with or without audio.

Uses

Digital signage is already used in numerous industries for different purposes. Examples of these include:

  • Advertising promotions in retail outlets
  • Up-to the-minute transport conditions at airports, train and bus stations
  • interactive maps at shopping centres
  • video on demand in hotel rooms
  • enhanced education via remote broadcasts and on-demand lectures and materials
  • web-based collaboration for enhanced internal communications

How it can help your business

Offering superior ROI, Digital Signage offers many benefits for businesses. Regardless of industry, the value from Digital Signage may be demonstrated through the different ways that information may be delivered to customers, suppliers, business partners and employees.

Some of these benefits are exhibited by the following examples:

  • Increase product awareness in-store or at other strategically placed locations
  • Increase walk-in customers by promoting products and services at the window even before they walk in the door
  • Improve business image by using high-tech digital signage system
  • Enhance customer experience by relaying information and entertaining content to reduce perceived wait times
  • Provide lower cost, on-demand training options to customers, employees and business partners
  • Sell screen time and real-estate to third-party advertisers

Solution Components

Implementation details depend on a number of factors and a design specific to client requirements will need to be prepared. However, for simplicity’s sake, typical components of a digital signage solution are shown below:

Components

Endpoint Devices that display the content.  Examples are LCDs, plasma display panels, digital projection screens etc
Digital Media Player Devices responsible for content playback
Digital Media encoder Encodes and streams live or pre-recorded audio, video and computer screen images for live and on-demand delivery.
IP Network The conduit over which the content is transferred between the devices and without which remote management of digital content will not be possible.
Media Management System Application used to manage what content is displayed on the endpoints.  The range of functionality is broad, but the application also typically allows control of playlists, schedules and layouts.
